Lever VC
, a venture capital firm putting money into alternative protein sources to meat, has completed its first close of Lever VC Fund I.

The fund, which is investing in early-stage plant-based and cell-cultivated meat and dairy companies, has already amassed a portfolio of ten alternative protein startups in Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore and the rest of the world. The fund has $23 million in capital commitments, with substantial support from Asian family offices.

About 70 per cent of capital comes from commitments from Hong Kong and Asian family offices and conglomerates with diversified interests, including consumer products and the food industry, who hope to gain exposure to the high-growth alternative protein sector. 

Barclays, UBS, and JP Morgan projected the sector to grow by 31 per cent year-over-year, becoming a $85-$140 billion market over the next 10 to 15 years.

The fund portfolio includes Singapore-based TurtleTree Labs, the first company in the world developing cow’s milk and human breast milk from cell cultivation; Hong Kong-based Avant, the leading cell-cultivated meat company in the greater China region; Better Meat Co, whose plant-based meat protein blend is featured at over 7,000 grocery stores across the United States; The Good Spoon, a fast-growing plant-based condiments brand with distribution via several of Europe’s largest retailers; Marvelous Foods, a pioneering plant-based yogurt brand in China; and Bond Pet Foods, the first company in the world producing real meat protein from fermentation.
